On Friday, the day before we returned from Guatemala, we made a trip to a local orphanage. I was pleased I was feeling better and was filled with anticipation of seeing the children. I don't know what I expected to see because I have no recollection of visiting one before. As we entered the place, we were greeted by an energetic, enthusiastic little guy.
I entered and was taken in by all the children. There were approximately 12 of us and there were plenty of children for each of us. We took turns with them. There were infants, toddlers and school aged children probably up to the age of 9 or so.
My attention went to a full faced, curly headed little girl who appeared so full of life. They played a spanish "corito" in the background and her little legs bounced to the beat of the music. As I held her, I was comforted in knowing that we all have a Father. I saw other members of my group playing on the ground with children, some giving piggy back rides, others blowing bubbles, one allowing herself to be stuck with stickers from head to toe. A new grandmother in our group was surrounded with babies much like her granddaughter while yet another took photographs and allowed the children to see themselves.
The children loved the attention and much too soon, the younger ones were taken inside to be fed. I was impressed with the idea that the workers knew the names of each child in their section. The Leader also addressed each child by their name. There were 52 children.
Our group was touched by these children who by the nature of their circumstances in life landed here. This has become a place of security, a place where they were cared for, a place where they mattered. The world may not know who they are but their heavenly Father knows each situation and He knows each child by name.
Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands... Isaiah 49: 15-16
